Nadja’s 2024 Summer Classes July 8-August 1

Sourdough: kids learn to bake naturally leavened bread and use a sourdough starter for unlimited baking inspiration!

Recipes of Europe: Inspired by my travels and German roots, we’ll make fresh tomato marinara and flip a Spanish tortilla!

The Science Behind Simple Bakes: from lemon bars to strawberry shortcake there are many different ways flour and sugar go together. Last year we harvested blackberries on BARN property for a blackberry short cake!

Seasonal Summer Cooking: My new class for summer 2024! We’ll go into the BARN community garden to harvest, cook and preserve our July bounty. Pestos, salads and quick pickles are some of the skills we’ll cover in class.

The BARN is the local community arts center on Bainbridge Island in Kitsap County, WA. Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network provides five weeks of summer camps to the local youth. The BARN Studios offer amazing classes put together by instructors in the woodshop, fiber arts, print making, writing, jewelry studios and more. I participated in the 2023 Summer Youth Culinary Arts Program in our commercial kitchen studio.

This summer, I look forward to continuing as an instructor for four weeks of the 2024 summer youth programming. It is a joy to teach such receptive and passionate kiddos! I’m extremely passionate about the purpose and creativity found in the culinary arts. To me it spans my interests in learning about other cultures, caring for our environment, and sharing nourishing meals. The most rewarding moments I’ve had as a culinary arts instructor are when my students see how simple and easy it is to eat well and consciously. Next to mastering fun recipes they learn food safety, knife skills, and get to experience the professional environment of a commercial kitchen. I’m amazed by the state of the art facilities offered here and feel honored to teach and uphold the BARN mission statement:

“To grow and inspire a creative community through craft, learning, and service.”
